Most consider summer the season to kick back, relax and unwind but here at the Sandbox we like to pack our summer with as much as we can. What can you possibly squeeze into three short summer months? Well, if you ask us…. A LOT.
- 32 Sandbox teams
- 26 visiting students from Indonesia
- 15 Demo Day presentations
- 6 weeks of intensive entrepreneurial and startup coaching
- 2 new area accelerators
Add visits to multiple countries and continents, speaking engagements, several social events for students and startups and you’ve got your standard Sandbox summer. Always moving, always shaking and always looking for new opportunities to support the startup community.
EXPANDING OUR BORDERS
This summer John, Braden and the gang had the opportunity to work with a group of young entrepreneurs from Institut Teknologi Bandung of Indonesia during the June Sandbox cohort. The students not only brought with them a ton of great ideas and new companies but also introduced the Sandbox to a new culture and perspective. From observing Ramadan, to customer traction, to introducing the other teams to new foods and new ideas, the visiting students added a dynamic to the Sandbox that definitely felt out of our Syracuse world. The international relationship also brought John and Braden overseas to Indonesia to speak at the Indonesian International Conference on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Small Business. And John kept his suitcase packed (and racked up some more frequent flyer miles!) when he popped over to Japan and Spain for Boots to Business.
While there was lots of international excitement this summer, the Sandbox was also buzzing at the local level. The Summer Cohort was packed with presentations from attorneys, marketers, venture capitalists, coders and other entrepreneurs. Sandbox teams presented at 1 Million Cups and several have garnered interest from venture capitalists. Our Demo Day was a great success and we saw Hypeist walk away the winner for best pitch and Joy’s Jell-Shots win for best booth. Both startups have roots in Syracuse University and are exciting companies to keep on your radar this year.
Perhaps one of the things we are most proud of this summer is contributing to the addition of two new accelerators to the Central New York startup community. Buffalo Sandbox in Buffalo, NY and IgnitieU in Albany, NY both launched and have credited the Sandbox with providing inspiration (as well as lots of consultation). We are proud to be an inspiration for these new accelerators and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them this year! If this is what we can squeeze into a few short summer months, imagine what we can do for the startup community this year!
